The
Team
Muslim Haqq is made possible by the dedication of amazing volunteers, individuals with experience from some of the most notable companies in the world harness their skills in the pursuit of amplifying Muslim voices.
How It Started
In July of 2020 Muslim Haqq founder Nabeela Ixtabalan published an article in the Globe and Mail titled "How many times do I have to Tell My Kids Canadians Dont' Hate Muslims" Nabeela wrote the article as a method of processing her own feelings after the hanouse murder of the Afzaal family, an anti-muslim hate crime that killed three generations of one family in London Ontario.

Nabeela had always used her platform and experience to start conversations about Islamaphobia but speaking up after the fact wasn't enough. Something needed to be done to challenge the echo chamber of misinformation that fuels anti-Muslim sentiment.

"Islam is currently the world’s second-largest religion and the fastest-growing major religion."
Roughly 24% of the global population is Muslim. While Islam is on a trajectory to become the world's largest religion by 2050 the average person knows very little about Muslims and Islam. But not knowing is not the only problem that needs to be solved, much of what people believe especially in the West is highly stereotyped and misinformed.

A recent report on Islamophobia in Canada submitted to the United Nations revealed the following public perception of Islam and Muslims in the US and Canada:

• 46% of Canadians have an unfavourable view of Islam – more than for any other religious tradition ;
• 56% of Canadians believe that Islam suppresses women’s rights ;
• 52% of Canadians feel that Muslims can only be trusted “a little” or “not at all” ;
• 42% of Canadians think discrimination against Muslims is “mainly their fault”;
• 47% of Canadians support banning headscarves in public (compared with 30% of Americans) ;
• 51% support government surveillance of mosques (as compared to 46% of Americans);
Misperceptions, stereotypes and misrepresentation of Muslims are the oxygen that Anti-Muslim hate flourishes on and the need to combat those echo chambers is the mission of Muslim Haqq.
Muslim Haqq's mission is to uncover the lived experiences and voices of Muslims and by doing so change what people believe and know about Muslims and Islam.

Not a week goes by when we are not at our desks or the kitchen table talking about an act of hate perpetrated against Muslims, blacks or other racialized and marginalized groups. Hate stems from fear and fear stems from what we don't know. When we uncover truths about each other we move hearts and minds. The truth matters, representation matters, Muslim voices matter.
